OK, so basically let me tell you a little about
me. My name is Lorraine and I'm 21 years old (22 in March.) I've been RPing in
various forms since I was probably 14. I got my start on Yahoo! Clubs in a
Sailor Moon RPG. Now, my RPing has taken breaks over the years but overall I
always return to it. My ambition is to be a best-selling romance author so
writing is my passion. I started RPG-Host because I like to help people and be
found useful. For years we've all combated ads and lengthy addresses and though
most people don't mind them, I find it's nice not to have that concern. So I
offer to you hosting for your RP forum. You'd get access to the files, the
ability to upload your own, a pretty subdomain, and best of all...no ads!
As of right now, I'm only offering three types of forum software. Simply because
these are the only three I've ever used. If you want to use a different one, by
all means I can help you with that, but I will be unable to offer much support
on the technical side of things.
phpBB3 - The latest version of phpBB doesn't have much to offer as far as modifications, but you really don't need that much to run a successful RP forum.
SMF - Admittedly, I've only ever used this type of software once. But apparently you are able to make it pretty and there is a nice selection of modifications available. Plus you don't have to do any coding for said modifications, it comes with an installer.
IPB v1.3 Final - Most RPers will be familiar with this software. It's the same software that InvisionFree and ipbFree uses. You can skin it the same way and when you use the full version of it, you have a whole lot of different features that you don't have with IF or ipbFree. I don't really have a link to give you for it besides the actual IPB website, but this version is no longer available for download from them. But then you probably already know what it looks like.
So Lorraine, what are the cons of this? I know there are some. Well, if you want to do anything besides the basics, you'll have to know how to do some coding of php and whatnot. If you don't know what you are doing, you could potentially mess up your board. Fixing your images isn't quite as easy (depending on how you look at it) with a free host. You'll actually have to upload your images via FTP and replace the default ones. Meaning that they'll have to have the same filename as the original. Not really that hard, but a tad bit more time-consuming when you have to know which file you are replacing. So you'll definitely have to learn how to use FTP if you don't know already, but trust me...it's so easy that even a caveman can do it!
